Perception is the process by which people interpret the input from their senses to give meaning and order to the world around them. According to the text, it is the process by which individuals select, organize, and interpret sensory data. The three components of perception are the perceiver, the target (the perceived), and the situation. The perceptual process begins with environmental stimuli and ends with a response or behavior. The perceiver responds to meaningful environmental stimuli and perceives what he or she wants and expects to see. The perceived is said to be influential in the perceptual process because certain general attributes of the perceived object, person or idea influenced what is noticed and what is not. The nature of the environment therefore influences what is perceived as normal or appropriate. Hellriegel and Slocum (2011) discuss perceptual selection and answer the question as to why people select or filter out a particular stimulus amongst multiple conflicting stimuli. External factors that affect perceptual selection are intensity, size, motion, contrast, and repetition. Internal factors include motivation, learning, personality, expectations, needs and interests such as sex, money and ethnic identity. Person perception according to the text is the process by which the individual attributes characteristics or traits to other people. Attribution then, is how an individual explains another person’s behavior. This can be determined by whether or not individuals are internals or externals. In internals the image of a person is in the individual’s head. For example, if someone attributes failure to internal forces, the individual will be blamed. On the other hand if that failure is attributed to external forces the environment rather than the individual will be blamed. Perceptual errors are errors in judgment and understanding. The text mentions the five most common perceptual errors: perceptual defense, which in essence is to protect one’s psyche and resist change. Stereotyping is to perceive an individual as a member of a group and thus having group attributes. Halo effect is when an individual gains an impression either positive or negative, on the basis of one thing, characteristic, event, or performance of another individual. Projection is the tendency for individuals to see their own traits in other people. Impression management is an attempt by individuals to manipulate or control the image or impression that others form about them. Attribution is an explanation of the cause of behavior. Attributions are important determinants of behavior in an organization because organization members react to other people’s behavior based on what they think caused the behavior. For example, poor performance may be attributed to lack of effort or ability, and poor relations with coworkers may be attributed to personality. Common external attributions for behavior include task difficulty and luck, chance, and easy tasks. Like perceptions, attributions can be inaccurate because of biases, including the fundamental attribution error, the actor-observer effect, and self-serving attribution. According to Attribution theory, three factors determine whether an individual’s behavior is internally or externally caused: Distinctiveness which shows different behaviors in different situations. Consensus is the extent to which the individual’s response is the same as others in the same situation. Consistency is the extent to which the individual responds in the same way over time. The Fieldwork Application: There was a time when I considered myself open-minded and a good judge of character. Over time that must have changed or I lost my touch. Having lived an experience which has re-evaluated that concept, I realized that had I not thought it through and reconsidered my perceptions and attributions I would not have accomplished the social and emotional gratification of being a nurse. I have been in the field of nursing for many years, and through those years I have developed my own style of working and require things to be done in a certain way. When I saw things not being done in the way I wanted them to be done, I would get annoyed, uneasy, and I always believed that I was a perfectionist and expected the same of every nurse that worked with me. I always had bias over people who had similar traits like mine, though they might not have been the brightest among the pack (similarity error). But with time and education, I realized that many things have changed and I have adapted to new ways of doing things; even if it meant investing more time and effort to learn new skills. I now have a different perception when I see and work with people around me. I try to acknowledge good and efficient work, as well as being mindful of the time and effort other individuals dedicate to completing patient assignments. When I interviewed new nurses for preceptor ship in my organization, I would give examples of people whose work I had liked and would make recommendations to the new employees to follow in their footsteps (Contrast Error). Over the years, I have realized that each individual has his/her own identity and asking that individual to be a replica of somebody else kills their personality. I have found that the maximum output from people comes out when they are themselves, and do the things they like to do, in the way which they try to do it. I have been guilty of judging people the moment I saw them, but quite often my first impressions have proven to be wrong (First-impression error). I have even made some mistakes in selecting nurses for my unit who looked impressive during interviews, but have failed miserably when they began work. So now, I do not jump to conclusions when I speak with potential employees. I have stopped generalizing characteristics based on my own expectations. It took some time, but I realized that everybody comes in with a different frame of mind, attributes and culture. But he also puts off business engagements for his walk with Mr Enfield, implying that one friendship is more important to him than his career.  His attitudes to others that share his profession are of a good nature. He doesnt get involved with people that go down the wrong path but is kind to his friends. But he isnt overtly emotional with them, nor does he come off as an open person. R L Stevenson intends the audience to trust Mr Utterson, because he is good natured, and doesnt do anything bad even as going to the theatre, but also he subtly make the reader think about whether they should trust him, because he puts reputation above happiness. They are not sure whether to like him, because they havent seen him be particularly nice or unkind to others around him, and there is little speech to judge him by with Mr Enfield. He does seem a curious person, who thinks about things a long time before talking about them. There are many contradictions about his character, it says that he is a cold person, but lovable at the same time. This is probably to let the audience know early, that in this book people can be more than just one type of person, which is the main theme to the book.  He has chosen to present him so early in the book, because throughout he is the backbone of the other characters, although he is not the main character, he is who we read most about, so we need to know his character before we ca go any further into the book. |Otherwise we would have to guess why he does things. Mr Enfield in different to his walking companion Mr Utterson, and we find this out with the sentence, a well known man about town which points to him being a frequently party going, and enjoying night life, which greatly contradicts his friend, who keeps himself to himself, and enjoys drinking on his own with his own thoughts and his house. He makes sure the read knows this is a road where well of people live, because there is well polished windows and it stands out amongst the other roads. His use of the metaphor, like a fire in a wood, means that the feeling is contagious like fire, and when you go there, you feel upbeat yourself. It then greatly differs to the description of the door, which makes you think of a rotting animal with words such as thrust forward blistered and stained. He makes sure it is very out of place, surrounded by undesirables on such thriving stree t full of happy people. It makes sure the reader associates with this door are annoying and ugly. The door, which is mentioned in great details, is a metaphor for the barrier that stands between the house and the rest of the street. It is something you can go through but it also means that there is something that isnt letting you in. When speaking about the flashback, the language is more informal, and the structure is not paragraphed.  Character of Enfield.  He doesnt tell his good friend where he has been, and this points that he may have been somewhere he shouldnt have been. He wouldnt have even told his friend if he had been doing something considered wrong, because when the book was written, reputation was everything. He also says that he didnt ask more questions about the man, because if it looks strange, the less he asks, because he doesnt want to have the burden of other peoples problems. Mr Enfield, builds up tension with his use of repetition, street after street after street and his language in describing the man is strong and vivid, by comparing him to a juggernaut, it creates a image clearly in the readers mind,. The crowd and he react to the man, in a way usually unknown; he says that he had an unbelievable desire to kill the man, for no reason. That he was so repulsive that he couldnt think of what it was that was so wrong about him. He doesnt mention that the person that made the cheque out was Harry Jekyll, because he doesnt want to think of his friend as being associated with such a bad man. He thinks that it was probably something to do with Harry doing something when he was young, and someone is blackmailing him. Utter son wants to know how the man got into the house that Enfield described as so ugly and mysterious, because they werent allowed to step into the house.

Morgans Raid in the Civil War Morgans Raid - Conflict Dates: Morgans Raid was conducted from June 11 to July 26, 1863 during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Armies Commanders Union Major General Ambrose Burnsideapprox. 40,000 men Confederates Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan2,462 men Morgans Raid - Background: In late spring 1863, with Union troops conducting the Siege of Vicksburg and General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia embarking on the Gettysburg Campaign, General Braxton Bragg sought to distract enemy forces in Tennessee and Kentucky. To accomplish this, he turned to Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan. A veteran of the Mexican-American War, Morgan had proven himself a capable cavalry leader during the early part of the war and had led several effective raids into the Union rear. Assembling a select force of 2,462 men and a battery of light artillery, Morgan received orders from Bragg directing him to attack through Tennessee and Kentucky. Morgans Raid - Tennessee: Though he happily accepted these orders, Morgan harbored a desire to carry the war into the North by invading Indiana and Ohio. Aware of his subordinates aggressive nature, Bragg strictly forbade him to cross the Ohio River as he did not wish Morgans command to be lost. Assembling his men at Sparta, TN, Morgan rode out on June 11, 1863. Operating in Tennessee, his forces began moving towards Kentucky late in the month after Major General William Rosecrans Army of the Cumberland began its Tullahoma Campaign. Seeking to aid Bragg by disrupting Rosecrans supply lines, Morgan crossed the Cumberland River on June 23 and entered Kentucky on July 2. Morgans Raid - Kentucky: After camping between Campbellsville and Columbia on the night of July 3, Morgan planned to push north and cross the Green River at Tebbs Bend the next day. Moving out, he found that the bend was guarded five companies of the 25th Michigan Infantry which had constructed earthworks in the area. Attacking eight times through the day, Morgan was unable to overwhelm the Union defenders. Falling back, he shifted south before crossing the river at Johnson Ford. Riding north, the Confederates attacked and captured Lebanon, KY on July 5. Though Morgan captured around 400 prisoners in the fighting, he was crushed with his younger brother, Lieutenant Thomas Morgan, was killed. Advancing towards Louisville, Morgans raiders fought several skirmishes with Union troops and local militia. Reaching Springfield, Morgan dispatched a small force to the northeast in an attempt to confuse the Union leadership as to his intentions. This detachment was later captured at New Pekin, IN before it could rejoin the main column. With the enemy off balance, Morgan led his main body northwest through Bardstown and Garnettsville before reaching the Ohio River at Brandenburg. Entering the town, the Confederates captured two riverboats, John B. McCombs and Alice Dean. In direct violation of his orders from Bragg, Morgan began moving his command across the river on July 8. Morgans Raid - Indiana: Landing east of Mauckport, the raiders drove off a force of Indiana militia before burning Alice Dean and sending John B. McCombs downstream. As Morgan began moving north into the heart of Indiana, the states governor, Oliver P. Morton, frantically put a call out for volunteers to oppose the invaders. While militia units quickly formed, the commander of the Department of the Ohio, Major General Ambrose Burnside, moved to shift Union forces to cut off Morgans lines of retreat south. Advancing up the Maukport Road, Morgan overwhelmed a force of Indiana militia at the Battle of Corydon on July 9. Entering the town, Morgan paroled the militiamen before seizing supplies. Morgans Raid - Ohio: Turning east, the raiders passed through Vienna and Dupont before arriving at Salem. There they burned the railroad depot, rolling stock, as well as two railroad bridges. Looting the town, Morgans men took cash and supplies before departing. Pressing on, the column entered Ohio at Harrison on July 13. That same day Burnside declared martial in Cincinnati to the south. Despite recent celebrations in response to the Union triumphs at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, Morgans raid caused widespread panic and fear across Indiana and Ohio. Passing through Springdale and Glendale, Morgan remained to the north of Cincinnati in an effort to avoid Burnsides men. Continuing east, Morgan dashed across southern Ohio with the goal of reaching West Virginia and turning south into Confederate territory. To accomplish this, he intended to re-cross the Ohio River using the fords at Buffington Island, WV. Assessing the situation, Burnside correctly guessed Morgans intentions and directed Union forces to Buffington Island. As Union gunboats moved into position, columns led by Brigadier Generals Edward Hobson and Henry Judah marched to intercept the raiders. In an effort to block the ford prior to their arrival, Burnside dispatched a local militia regiment to the island. Reaching Buffington Island late on July 18, Morgan elected not to attack this force. Morgans Raid - Defeat Capture: This pause proved disastrous as Union forces arrived during the night. With Lieutenant Commander LeRoy Fitchs gunboats blocking the river, Morgan soon found his command nearly surrounded on a plain near Portland, OH. In the resulting Battle of Buffington Island, Union troops captured around 750 of Morgans men, including his executive officer, Colonel Basil Duke, and inflicted losses of 152 killed and wounded. Morgan was able to escape with around half of his men by slipping through some nearby woods. Fleeing north, he hoped to cross the river at an undefended ford near Belleville, WV. Arriving, around 300 men successfully crossed before Union gunboats arrived on the scene. While Morgan elected to remain in Ohio, Colonel Adam Stovepipe Johnson led the rest to safety. Reduced to around 400 men, Morgan turned inland and sought to escape his pursuers. Resting at Nelsonville, the Confederates burned boats along a local canal before riding northeast. Passing through Zanesville, Morgan still sought to cross into West Virginia. Pressed by Brigadier General James Shackelfords Union cavalry, the raiders were attacked at Salinesville, OH on July 26. Badly routed, Morgan lost 364 of men in the fighting. Escaping with a small party, he was captured later that day by Major George W. Rue of the 9th Kentucky Cavalry. Though many of his enlisted men were taken to Camp Douglas near Chicago, Morgan and his officers were incarcerated at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, OH. Morgans Raid - Aftermath: Though the entirety of his command was lost as a result of the raid, Morgan captured and paroled around 6,000 Union soldiers prior to his capture. In addition, his men disrupted Union rail operations across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio while also burning 34 bridges. Despite being captured, Morgan and Duke felt the raid was a success as it allowed Bragg to retreat safely while tying down thousands of Union troops which otherwise could have reinforced Rosecrans. On November 27, Morgan and six of his officers successfully escaped from the Ohio Penitentiary and returned south. Though Morgans return was lauded by the Southern press, he was not received with open arms by his superiors. Angry that he had violated his orders to remain south of the Ohio, Bragg never fully trusted him again. Placed in command of Confederate forces in eastern Tennessee and southwest Virginia, Morgan attempted to rebuild the raiding force that he had lost during the 1863 campaign. In the summer of 1864, he was accused of robbing a bank in Mt. Sterling, KY. While some his men were involved, there is no evidence to suggest that Morgan played a role. While working to clear his name, Morgan and his men encamped at Greeneville, TN. On the morning of September 4, Union troops attacked the town. The lovers, Romeo, a Montague and Juliet a Capulet come from two house holds both alike in dignity who are powerful feuding families. Both Romeo and Juliet are powerful characters. We first sense Romeos compelling frustration when Shakespeare uses oxymoron O brawling love! O loving hate! this implies that love is a scrap and you are desperately trying to fight against it. The loving hate means that you dont want to fall in love but you cant help it. We discover Juliets quick wit early in the play. It is an honour that I dream not of. This conveys that Juliet knows exactly what she wants and she will not let anybody influence those ideas. Juliet also shows how she can sophistically answer people in a polite manor and not in the typical teenage language. The quote For saints have hand that pilgrims hands do touch, suggests that the language rapidly becomes similar culminating in the beginning. During act 1 scene 1 Romeo again questions the meaning of love with Benvolio love is a smoke with the fume of sighs. In this section Romeo is talking about the sad aspects of love, and smoke implies that love is unclear. Shakespeare uses language that makes Romeo sound clever and intelligent. Not having that which, having makes them short. Here Romeo cleverly and wittingly quips that the possession of something makes a person happy, suddenly makes time run quickly. In the same scene Romeo plays with words and the meaning of love as he speaks with Benvolio. Romeo is a very clever 16 year old, he is mature within his inner feelings, however many people believe he is not mature and clever. Although Juliet doesnt say much in act 1, what she does say is spoken in volume and shows propriety. it is not an honour I dream not of. This implies that Lady Capulet and Juliet are having an in depth conversation about how Juliet is to be married. However Juliet expresses her feelings in a mature and polite manor. During the conversation, Lady Capulet asks the question Speak briefly, can you like of Paris love? Juliet again answers in a mature manor, Ill look to like, if looking liking move. This means that if Juliet likes the look of Paris she will try to like him. It also shows how she can use her language in a sophisticated way. In the prelude before the Capulets feast Mercutio tries to persuade Romeo to dance at the feast, but Romeo insists that he is too love lorn to do anything but hold a torch Give me a torch I will bear the light. this means that he wouldnt do any dancing and wouldnt wear a mask. He is being a party pooper, why? He is depressed and is questing love. In his quote however, he does emphasise the word light. The reason why the word light is enforced is because he sees Juliet as the best and that she represents light. In act 1 scene 4 Rome has a premonition of some doom hanging in the future. I fear too early; for my mind in the stars In this quote Shakespeare shows how Romeo and Juliets language entwines and blends together, this suggests just not how their minds think alike but it is a meeting of minds met by fate. Act 3 scene 5 shows Juliet also has a premonition of the future Me thinks I see thee so low in the bottom of the tomb. Juliets vision is similar to Romeos in act 1 scene 4. Again Juliet is pessimistic and words such as bottom of a tomb confirms this. Elizabethans felt that fate played a vital part in the way people lived because God was very important and people believed that fate was due to this. During the feast in Act 1 scene 5 Romeos speech shows smitten with Juliets beauty. O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright. Romeo conveys that her beauty is brighter than the blaze of any torch and that her presence enlightens the whole room. This also means that Juliets beauty is radiant and enriches everything. Romeo says a few more things to enforce her beauty. He then makes his plan. When the dance is over, he will note where she is, then make his way to her and touch her hand. Ill watch her place of stand, and, touching hers, make my rude hand. Romeos speech is a iambic pentameter and it in 5pairs of rhyming couplets: O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night As a rich jewel in an Ethiops ear: Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping for crows, As yonder lady oer her fellows shows. The measure done, Ill watch her place of stand, And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I neer saw true beauty till this night. This poetic speech would have been a grand example of his social position and high breeding, which Elizabethans would understand and appreciate the poetry. During lines 92 109 Romeo and Juliet play the game of blending together and using poetry to portray this. With Tybalts threat still echoing in our ears, we now see Romeo holding Juliets hand and wittily offering to kiss it. He says, If I profane with my unworthiest hand Romeo sounds sharp, but hes not. The popular love poetry of the time often portrayed the lover as one who worshipped his beloved with religious devotion. Romeo is willing to pay the penalty (fine) for touching Juliets hand (this holy shrine) by kissing it. Juliet willingly joins in Romeos game. Showing her own wit, she tells him that theres nothing wrong with his hand and that hes showing proper devotion by holding her hand-a kiss is not required. She adds, For saints have had that pilgrims hands do touch meaning that its allowed to touch the hand of a saint. The grander design of his poetry rushes onto us when Romeo and Juliet meet. The poetic thread of language joins both characters as he says one line and she finishes the next. Theyre both poetically entwined, and Shakespeare does this artistically by adding rhyme, which additionally blends the language together giving movement. The language relates to the couples relationship as Romeo and Juliet both use the same devices and their language mingles. This suggests that the two are growing increasingly closer and stronger as a pair. Act 2 Scene 2 is one of the most important and dramatic scenes in the play. Romeo over hears Juliets thoughts and feelings over him. O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father, and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn of love And Ill no longer be a Capulet. Here Juliet expresses her feelings towards Romeo. She suggests that if he tells her that he loves her she will no longer be a Capulet. She also implies that she is in love with the words. Be but sworn of love. Without this in distraction their romance could not progress as quickly. During this scene there is a lot of dramatic imagery It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. This enforces how powerful Juliets appearance is, pursued by Romeo. As the dramatic imagery and poetic language enfolds between Romeo and Juliet the audience senses that the two star crossd lovers are perfectly matched. Shakespeares language in this scene is shown to be un realistic as it is stage language. The reason for thinking this is because in every day speech the language is not as always expressive, poetical and full of imagery and dramatic irony. Juliet then suggests defiance, an ability to fly in the face of conversation when she calls on him to doff his name. This quote by Juliet, expresses her feelings towards Romeo and she suggests that Romeo can have her and she will be his. Juliet then explains how he is the man she loves, not the name, its only the name that is the enemy and that even if he gets rid of his name, he will still be the same person. I believe that the term the name is the enemy relates to Romeo being a Montague. Shakespeare again uses oxymorons in his language, this time Juliet uses the device in her parting line parting is such sweet sorrow. Shakespeare is finishing a very powerful and dramatic scene with the thought of Romeo and Juliet on the edge of meeting fate. After Act 2 scene 2 the lovers only meet on two further occasions, their wedding and when they part. During these two happenings the mood of the language is changed as it is made precise and compact making each scene seem very short. The reason for this is because if the audience gets confused the whole plot of the play could be lost. Throughout Act 3 scene 5 both, Romeo and Juliet use imagery between themselves. Juliet uses opposites and Romeo starts his replies with personification. Juliet: Wilt thou be gone? It is not yet near day: It was the nightingale, and not the lark, That piercd the fearful hollow of thine ear; Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate tree: Believe me, love, it was the nightingale. Romeo: It was the lark, the herald of the morn, No nightingale. Look, love, what envious streaks Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east. Nights candles are burnt out, and jocund day Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die. These two quotes show the personification and opposites used by the two lovers. The language is very poetic and has a slight rhythm to it. This allows flow to the language. On the other hand as this section enfolds their language becomes close. The audience can see that Juliet intends to carry on and to compare the music to represent them parting. Their division, which is sweet and the fate, that is to tear them apart. some say the lark makes sweet division this doth not so, for she divideth both. As fate compels the two star crossd lovers they are never to meet again in life. Romeo and Juliets parents are both punished by their beloved childrens death. Yet, fate is seen as a double punishment: through their very words Romeo and Juliet are evidently a perfect union. Some shall be pardond and some punished for never was a story of more woe than this of Romeo and Juliet

A Man Without Feeling   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Is Hamlet capable of feeling? In Shakespeare’s Hamlet the author creates a world of appearance vs. reality. Part of this world is Hamlet who becomes perplexed by what he must do: which is to avenge his fathers’ death. However Hamlet is incapable of experiencing the feelings he should. Thus has to put on an act for everyone around him to appear normal. Another endeavor Hamlet has to deal with is his relationship with Ophelia. He chooses to disregard the relationship by pretending that there is no basis for it and that it was based on false pretences. He is forced to act this way because he has no other choice. Hamlet cannot experience any true emotions and so he does not know what he truly feels towards Ophelia. In the end Hamlet has to make the ultimate sacrifice to maintain his appearance as a good and noble prince- his life. He avenges his father’s death and returns everything to how it once was. However Hamlet does not do this because he kn ows it is what should be done or because he truly feels compelled to do it by his passion or his reason, but because it is what would be expected and what others would do. Hamlet cannot feel and therefore has to put on an act during the entire play.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A predominant theme in this play is how appearance contrasts with reality. Where reality represents the truth an true emotions and appearance has the connotation of deception and false emotions or a lack there of. All of the characters put on an appearance except those who have nothing to hide, in this case everyone except Horatio and Fortinbrass. Now Hamlet admits that he is putting on an act during the play, and in numerous scenes his deception of those around him can clearly be noted. Yet if Hamlet is suppose to represent a hero why does he put on an act, since he should have nothing to hide? He does this for the simple reason that he does not know what he should do based purely on what he feels, since he feels nothing. The way he acts is navigated by those who Hamlet views as noble leaders, Fortinbras, Alexander the Great, Caesar and of coarse his father. â€Å"I find thy apt;/ And duller shouldst be than the fat weed/ That roots itself in ease on Lethe wharf ,/ Wouldst thou not stir in this.

Stigma of HIV/AIDS It goes without saying that HIV and AIDS are as much about social phenomena as they are about biological and medical concerns. From the moment scientists identified HIV and AIDS, social responses of fear, denial, stigma, and discrimination have accompanied the epidemic. Discrimination has spread rapidly, fuelling anxiety and prejudice against the groups most commonly affected, as well as those living with HIV or AIDS. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of education and misconceptions that have developed about the disease. Some individuals affected (or believed to be affected) by HIV have even been rejected by their families, their loved ones, and their communities.
